A Rainbow Cross-walk is being painted in Downtown Smithers

A symbol of equality and acceptance in being painted on a crosswalk in Downtown Smithers.

Out front of Bugwood Bean, crews are painting a rainbow crosswalk to show support for the LGBTQ community.

The town has gone ahead with the multi-coloured cross-walk after a letter for the idea hit the town’s desk.

Councillor Phil Brienesse says this opens up a discussion.

“Many letters in opposition, and many letters in favor as well. it’s definitely a polarizing issue. but I think the fact that it is so polarizing shows how much it’s needed. It shows how much there needs to be discussion and awareness.”

Crews will be working throughout the day painting the crosswalk that crosses Main Street out front of Bugwood Bean, blocking off the street.
