Water Conservation Awareness Day in Telkwa tomorrow is aimed at curbing water usage

With a limited water storage capacity, Mayor Darcy Repen says the summer is a time where more water is used

The village has summer restrictions in place, but Repen says education and awareness is crucial to their water conservation plan

He says those summer water restrictions could be permanent, considering the water will still come from the same place.

“Flow in those rives is extremely susceptible to those withdraws. If we want to continue to have healthy habitats and salmon, and, quite frankly, just enough water to get by, we need to be aware of what we’re using,” says Repen. “water in our area, it’s a precious resource. and in the village, especially with our treated water, it’s a really limited resource in the summer time.”

There are plans for a new water tower to increase Telkwa’s storage capacity.
