Opposition to Pacific Northwest LNG decision mounting

Criticism has been mounting against the federal approval of the Pacific Northwest LNG project from affected first nations, environmental groups and the NDP.

The NDP has been criticizing the Liberals for holding onto Conservative climate targets, as well as not reforming the regulatory process for projects like Pacific Northwest LNG.

Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Nathan Cullen says the proposed location for the LNG facility on Lelu Island near a salmon estuary is too risky.

“I think LNG can be done well. but it’s not being done well when the process is broken, when good science is ignored and bad science is being treated as the gospel,” says Cullen.

“Get the project moved 400 metres(from Lelu) and 90 per cent of the problems go away.”

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in Ottawa today(wed) that Tuesday’s decision is based on growing the economy paired with environmental protection.

In May, over 90 scientists came out against the Pacific Northwest LNG project, citing concerns around greenhouse gas emissions.

The Office of the Wet’suwet’en has called for legal action against the federal decision.

“He(Justin Trudeau)talks about a new relationship reconciliation with first nations. This is his first opportunity to show that he’s willing to work with us, and what does he do; the opposite,” says Chief Namoks with the Office of the Wet’suwet’en.
