Smithers Victim Services resolution not endorsed at UBCM

A Smithers council resolution calling for mandatory victim services funding from municipalities wasn’t endorsed this week at the Union of BC Municipalities convention in Victoria.

The UBCM Committee says the resolution would impose a blanket requirement on all local governments to contribute funding.

To fix any shortfalls for victim services, council was pushing for a 50 per cent funding requirement for municipalities.

Right now the province pays 50 per cent while municipalities voluntary cover the rest.

The committee also says the resolution was contrary to UBCM policy that called for the province to increase its contribution to RCMP based victim services.

Earlier in the year, Smithers council had the resolution passed by the North Central Local Government Association.

Victim services helps victims of crime and trauma.
