World Homeless Day at Bovill Square, Smithers next Thursday

World Homeless Day at Bovill Square next week is aimed at connecting people to the issue of homelessness.

Smithers Mayor Taylor Bachrach also sees the day of activities and education as a way for the community to collaborate.

“And maybe we’ll have a chance to discuss ideas that could make the situation better when it comes to housing and everyone in our community,” says Bachrach. “There’s a lot of work left to do. There’s people living in our community without any housing, and without adequate housing. so we need to improve that situation.”

He says homelessness is an issue that affects the entire community.

“There’s this idea that if we make housing the first step for the most vulnerable members of our community, than a lot of the other challenges we face are easier to deal with.”

Bachrach says council has been working on the complex issue, and are offering land to the Smithers Community Services Association for affordable housing units in town.

World Homeless Day will have a free BBQ at noon next Thursday.
