A petition of nearly 500 signatures has been calling on the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako to allow the salvaging of wood and metal at the transfer stations.
Telkwa Resident Brad Junkin started the petition a few weeks ago.
“What I’m interested in is that people, who have been told for years to recycle, reuse and this sort of thing, are allowed to reuse, recycle, refurbish, says Junkin.
He says it would benefit him and his concrete sculptures, as well as others in the community that could salvage for things like firewood.
“The biggest comment that came out(of the petition) was they(RDBN) should have had some public consultation before they closed it, because this is almost a cultural thing that they have stomped on.”
Chair of the board for the regional district Bill Miller says it’s a liability issue for people to climb through piles of metal and wood.
“People can’t crawl through the dump and drag stuff out of it. It has to be done in such a way similar to the reuse sheds where there’s an opportunity for people to safely access things that can be reused,” says Miller.
He says the district is looking at how some of the materials at the transfer stations can be reused by the public through a solid waste management plan.
He says updating that plan is long overdue.
