Smithers and Houston Fire win awards

This year marks the 25 anniversary the Smithers fire service has been supporting Muscular Dystrophy

Last year they raised over 40 thousand dollars for Muscular Dystrophy that led to a Corporate Partner of the Year Award on Sunday with Harley Davidson.

“Ours was the most successful single event dollar wise for fundraising in the last year,” says Deputy Chief and Muscular Dystrophy Association of Canada board member Kelly Zacharias.

He says it’s been the charity of choice for fire fighters since 1954.

“It started that way and we’ve gotten to know a lot of the people with nueromuscular disorders…and it’s a really worthy cause,” says Zacharias.

“It’s incredible, we’re very ecstatic. We have a very cohesive group.”

Smithers has raised over 630 thousand dollars over the past 24 years.

The Houston fire department also won the BC/Yukon Fire Fighter Award for raising 7 – 10 thousand dollars.
