Leaked document shows plans for pipeline deal with Gitxsan

A deal between the Gitxsan Nation and the Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Project has been made, according to a leaked document this week.

The Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Line would support the Pacific Northwest LNG project that’s already been approved federally.

The ‘Prince Rupert Gas Transmission Project Natural Gas Pipeline Benefits Agreement’ would prevent Gitxsan from interfering with the natural gas pipeline proponent during construction.

The agreement also says “the Gitxsan Development Corporation will assist the Province in seeking to resolve any action that may be taken by any member that is inconsistent with this agreement.”

A leaked Trustee Resolution of the Amdimxxw Trust also shows a payout of over $5.3 million among several Gitxsan leaders.

The Trust was settled in June 2016, according to the document. It also says payments will be held in trust until an agreement is made.

The agreement will make a project payment of over 5.8 million dollars for the natural gas pipeline project. It will also provide ongoing yearly benefits of 10 million dollars to the Gitxsan and other eligible First Nations.

The agreement also “precludes Gitxsan from identifying concerns about impacts of the Natural Gas Pipeline Project,” and also ‘precludes’ parties from trying to resolve concerns as a part of the consultation process.

No deal is yet official with the province. More to come.
