Workshop looks to preserve Wet’suwet’en language through education

With the Wet’suwet’en language under threat of disappearing, a workshop is aimed at teaching it to future generations.

Director of the Smithers Library Wendy Wright says it’s a language that has a connection to everyone in the Bulkley Valley.

“At this language workshop there’s lots of non-first nations people that want to learn more – to become more knowledgeable, become more respectful, and learn more about this land that is now their home,” says Wright. “language is so essential to our culture, and knowledge of who we really are; the formation of our identity. And very few young people speak the first nations languages.”

Elder and Wet’suwet’en Linguist Lilian Morris will be presenting at Monday’s workshop at 7 p.m. at the Smithers Library – all are invited for free.
