RDBN says home owner building code restricts growth in the region

The Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako isn’t too happy with the home owner building regulations.

The district’s board of directors had a lengthy conversation around some of the rules introduced in March by the province that has pushed for more regulation, says Chair Bill Miller. He says they’re not too keen on it.

“We think it restricts growth and the ability for people to effectively, and cost effectively, build housing.”

In March the province added new builder qualifications requiring applicants to demonstrate proficiency in seven areas related to residential construction. That includes exams and other qualifications.

“If you want to build your own house you need to pass an examination and pretty much be a certified builder if you want to build your own house.

“There was a recommendation that we write a response to that whole piece, and that staff bring that back to us for approval,” says Miller.
