Voting Day is Saturday to elect either Dennis Tait or Nick Powell as the District of Houston’s new councillor.
The issues facing Houston including the closing of mines, mills and the loss of the grocery store lead as issues for both candidates.
Working for both the regional district and municipality, as well as being a volunteer firefighter, Dennis Tait hopes to put something back into the community.
“I’ve lived here for 38 years, raised a family here; have some time now,” says Tait, who recently retired. He says he offers “eccentricity; if I’m in it I have to read it and review and know it. I have time to look at nooks and crannies of opportunities.”
Tait is also focused on curbing any unnecessary spending and keeping the budget tight.
Meanwhile former Councillor Powell wants to keep Houston attractive to the resource sector.
“Some of the things that are on the horizon including LNG pipelines, and other pipeline activity; I think Houston is well situated along the Highway 16 corridor to take advantage,” says Powell.
Health care is also a significant priority.
“We don’t have 24-hour health care like other communities. We have expanded some of our health care resources,” say Powell.
Powell was a Houston Councillor in 2002 for one term and decided not to run for re-election. He’s worked in construction, forestry and ran the U Brew in town and is recently retired, prompting him to run again for public service.
Voting will take place at the municipal office Saturday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Those interested in voting earlier can go to the municipal office before 5 p.m. today and tomorrow.
