Drugs and weapons seized in Smithers drug bust Friday

Smithers RCMP made five arrests related to the seizure of several drugs and a loaded handgun on Friday.

Police say they also seized a large quantity of cash and a prohibited weapon among the drugs including crack cocaine, mushrooms, hashish and marijuana.

With assistance from the Terrace K-9 unit, they executed a search warrant at a Smithers residence where they also located stolen items that are believed to be used as payment for drugs.

“This is criminal commerce,” says Sergeant Shaun Begg. “Drug dealers will do whatever it takes to sell their products. Some of the articles that were recovered can be linked back to recent smash and grabs.”

A 48-year-old male remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing. Police are recommending Controlled Drugs and Substance Act charges.

The drug bust comes on the heels of a recent fentanly overdose of a 22-year-old Smithers man, explain police.

Police are reminding citizens to report suspicious activity, and to secure their homes and vehicles to prevent thefts.
