Grade 8 students will be getting some messaging that goes beyond the regular anti drug rhetoric.
A one day Youth Summit aimed at promoting health and preventing drug abuse and crisis will be making its way to School District 54 by the spring.
Organizer Cpl. Mike Dame says it goes beyond waiting until kids are at risk.
“We’re taking healthy kids and keeping them healthy. We’re taking at risk youth and giving them the experience and knowledge to help them make healthy choices,” says Dame.
He’s seen the program work for several students that in the one day have found a new perspective with relationships, their health and how to transition from the sometimes awkward phase from adolescence to adulthood.
“I know that there were many silent ah ha moments for the kids that were sitting there and listening. There were many presenters there that were top notch.”
Dame says the program is difficult to secure grant funding for because it’s not centrally focused on youth at risk.
He says they’re looking to hold the one day seminar for 300 youth from Hazelton, Smithers and Houston in Smithers, and are working out the details.
