MMIWG hearings scheduled for Smithers in September

The Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls Inquiry has announced hearing dates across the country

The commission is scheduled to make their way to Smithers on the week of September 25th

Chief Commissioner Marion Buller says they want to hear from families that have lost women and girls

“We are very mindful because we have been told all across Canada that’s it’s difficult for people to come forward for a variety of reasons – and we want to make sure everyone feels safe and they’re as comfortable as we can make them,” says Buller.

After the first hearings, Buller says they’ve learned that Indigenous people are still suffering from the lasting effects of residential schools.

She says one of the effects is systemic violence against indigenous women and girls.
