Smithers Town Council officially unveiled a new parking space along Second Avenue between King and Main Streets.
The 47-car lot includes the town’s first ever electric vehicle charging station, new street lights, touchless pay, and a freshly paved surface capable of draining fluid quickly.
Mayor Taylor Bachrach believes this will make the downtown area more vibrant.
“A big part of that is making it accessible for visitors and residents, which means providing places for people to park. I think it’s going to be a great amenity for our community and should support the strength of our downtown in the future.”
Bachrach adds this $236,000 project is also part of a generational shift for the town.
“We will try to meet this demand, and we’ll try to provide an opportunity for people with electric vehicles who are coming through our community, to charge up their car, visit Main Street, spend some money in local stores, and put Smithers on the map.”
The funding for the parking lot also came from a $75,000 grant given by the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako (RDBN).
