Smithers team brings home stack of medals

Smithers athletes have returned with medals from the World Karate and Kickboxing Commission Canadian Nationals.

National coach and Shogun Dojo instructor, Marwan Abu Khadra says 14 Smithers athletes from age seven to over 35 qualified to compete at the national competition in Ottawa.

“We came back from that event with I believe, 12 medals; seven gold, three silver and the remainder was bronze.”

He says three-time Canadian champion and two-time world champion, Dave Percy brought home two gold medals for continues fighting along with Tareq Abu Khadra who brought home two gold in continues and point fighting.

He says in their categories , Emily Clougher brought home gold and silver, Tristan Hunt brought home two gold and Sage Lawson brought home a silver medal.

Abu Khadra says he thinks the Smithers team may be the best in Canada when you consider the small size of the group and the number of medals they brought home combined with being the team that must travel the furthest to get to the competition.
