Smithers, Burns Lake sees another jump in COVID-19 cases

COVID-19 cases have jumped once again in the Smithers and Burns Lake local health areas. 

293 cases have been identified within the Smithers region from January 9 to 15, which is an increase of nearly 100 cases from the previous week. 

Meanwhile, in Burns Lake, 53 new cases were reported during this period compared to 31 the last reporting period. 

The increase in cases have resulted in daily case rates to jump as well. 

In the Smithers LHA, 196 cases are being identified per 100,000 people and in the Burns Lake region 135 cases per 100,000 people are being reported.

New data from the BCCDC is showing vaccination within residents are plateauing in both regions as 77% of residents in Smithers LHA are fully vaccinated and 75% in the Burns Lake area. 

As for first doses, 82% of residents in the Smithers region have received their first dose and in Burns Lake, 79% are fully vaccinated. 

Children within both regions continue to receive their first dose of a vaccine.

27% of children in the Smithers LHA have received their first dose and 28% have in the Burns Lake area. 

Booster doses have also increased in both areas.
