The B-C Human Rights Tribunal has awarded 150 thousand dollars to an indigenous mother in what it’s calling an “unprecedented” settlement.
The woman had her children taken away after social workers suspected that the woman abused alcohol and was responsible for the sudden death of her baby even though natural causes were listed as the cause of death.
The tribunal ruled the suspicions were totally unfounded…..the result of laws, policies, and practices that have created a system stacked against indigenous families.
It’s the second-highest such award made in our province.
