Three unaccounted for after boating “prank”

Smithers RCMP says a prank may have turned ugly over the long weekend.

Police received a call around 2 AM Tuesday regarding a missing boat.

A 14-foot aluminum vessel had been taken off the boat launch at the Fort Telkwa Campground and was found anchored 30 feet offshore.

A witness says three individuals moved the boat, but police reported the trio hasn’t been seen since.

Two boats and a helicopter search were conducted yesterday afternoon. Search and Rescue found nothing and local fisherman said they hadn’t seen anything either.

Police believe the missing three did make it ashore and are asking the individuals to confirm their safety. Since the boat was recovered, the theft accusations “may no longer be an issue.”
