BC records first avalanche-related death in 2024 following fatal incident near Chetwynd

An avalanche near Chetwynd has claimed a life according to Avalanche Canada.

The agency stated a snowmobiler was caught and buried in the Hasler riding area, west of the community on Saturday.

The rider was located and extracted by snowmobilers at the scene, but did not survive.

The avalanche happened in a chute feature at tree line elevation.

Data about this accident is limited, due to the lack of daylight and elevated avalanche danger experienced by rescuers on scene. Updates may be provided if more information becomes available.

This is the first avalanche-related death in BC this year.

Dangerous avalanche conditions exist across almost all of the province’s forecast regions including the Northern Rockies, as the warm weather destabilizes the snowpack.
