With it’s $100,000 in grant money, Telkwa Council plans to leverage even more for local recreational upgrades.
The funding will be put towards improvements to both Dockrill rink and the barbecue ball diamonds. This includes resurfacing both, as well as new boards and roof for the outdoor arena.
Mayor Darcy Repen says this is a large sum, but improvements are pricey and more money will be needed.
“Both [projects are] expensive. $100,000, unfortunately, even with grants, really isn’t going to go as far as we’d like, but what’s good about the process is we get a better picture down the road of what we’re working toward,” he says.
Repen says Council will be applying for more grants once it has a realistic cost for these improvements.
“I’ve communicated with the regional district and there’s no concern about the timelines. We just want to get as much bang for our buck with this as possible,” he says.
Grant applications are accepted monthly. Council will skip the November deadline and plans to have a clearer picture of upgrade costs for December.
