Telkwa Tulip planting thanks WWII Canadians

Historical Dutch-Canadian relations will be celebrated in Telkwa tomorrow with tulip-planting.

This year is the 70th anniversary of the 100,000 Dutch tulip bulbs sent to Canada in 1945, thanking the country for liberating the Netherlands and housing the Royal Family during the second World War.

Telkwa Administrative Assistant Dawn Hanson says these flowers are a great way to remember our veterans and how Canada has touched other nations.

“The gratitude that another country feels for that and the pride that can come with that and the role that Canada can play,” she says, “we had [World War II] veterans from Smithers, Telkwa, and the Bulkley Valley area so it’s a really interesting way to bring those ideas home.”

Telkwa is one of just 140 communities nationwide to receive the red and white tulip bulbs.

The planting ceremony will be held tomorrow at 1 PM at Hankin Corner.
