BC Hydro is encouraging low income customers to apply for a free portable air conditioning unit.
Summers over the last few years have seen warmer temperatures, making air conditioning more popular across the province.
Spokesperson, Mora Scott says the program makes AC units more accessible.
“We’ve actually seen it increase from about a third in 2020 to more than 50 percent as of last year, and that’s a direct result of the past few hot summers that we’ve had.” says Scott.
“We also know air conditioning isn’t accessible for everyone, and that’s why the government introduced free the air conditioning program for low income and heat vulnerable individuals.”
Scott says due to the amount of applicants last year, there are 28,000 units this year, compared to the previous 8,000.
BC Hydro gave other ways to stay cool such as closing the drapes and blinds, shutting doors and windows, and using a fan.
