Construction on the Smithers Cycle 16 Connector Trail is set to begin later this month.
Town Communication and Engagement Officer Samantha LeBlanc said the idea had been in the works since 2019.
“We received funding as well in March from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure Active Transportation Infrastructure Program,” she added.
The project is expected to cost about $2.1 million with about a quarter of the cost being covered by the grant.
Once complete, the trail will run from the Bulkley River Bridge on Highway 16, down Tatlow Road, and connect to the multi-use path along Fulton Avenue.
“We’re really excited about the whole Cycle 16 project that was awarded $9.8 million to complete phases two, three, and four of the trail,” added LeBlanc.
The project will connect Smithers and Telkwa with a multi-use path separate from Highway 16.
Construction will begin July 29th and is scheduled to open next year.
