B.E.S.S. Grand Opening after $5-Million renos

Construction on a Granisle school was recently finished, and staff, students, and the community celebrated the “21st-century” building Friday.

The Babine Elementary-Secondary school was originally built to fit 450 students, but enrolment has declined over the years and now only teaches about 30.

60% of the school was demolished and the remaining parts, such as the classrooms, library, kitchen, and multipurpose area, were all updated.

District 91 Instruction Director Manu Madhok says the reconstruction has addressed the students and community’s needs.

“It used to have two floors, so you can imagine that 30 kids rambling through this old giant building wasn’t fantastic,” he says, “now it’s laid out in a much more effective way for the number of kids that are there and that how the community uses that school.”

The $5.28 million dollar improvements were paid for by the Provincial government through a rural school grant program.
