Council declare Right to a Healthy Environment

Smithers Council declared townspeople’s rights to a healthy environment Tuesday night, as part David Suzuki’s Blue Dot project.

The agreed-upon statement of values promises Council will make environmentally conscious decisions regarding things like climate change, green transportation, and safe food.

Mayor Taylor Bachrach says the declaration means Council will continue to keep the environment a top priority.

“We live in this incredible environment, we have clean water, we have fish that come up the river and we want to not only protect this environmental quality but embrace it for future generations,” he says.

According to bluedot.ca, 110 countries around the world already have the right to live in a healthy environment.
