Grey Cup Festival touches down in Smithers

The Grey Cup Festival made a stop in Smithers this evening (Thursday) ahead of the main event in Vancouver.

It was held at Coast Mountain GM featuring a BBQ, tailgate games and activities, as well as some prizes and giveaways.

“We’ve been on the road for about three and a half months, and we’re going to about 50 communities throughout the province,” said Festival Executive Director Riyley Wiwchar.

“We’re excited to be coming to Smithers and trying to bring a taste of the festival to the community.”

The last time Vancouver hosted the Grey Cup was in 2014.

“This is the biggest tour that has ever taken place in advance of it and one of our missions was wanting the whole province to get involved,” said Wiwchar.

“To me, the favourite [exhibit] is the video booth. It’s a bit of an old school way of getting people to provide a message, share their favourite CFL moment or talk about why they love their community,” Wiwchar said.

Some of the videos recorded through the tour will be played during the Grey Cup playoffs.

“Unfortunately, the Grey Cup trophy will not be in Smithers. It’s been able to go on a couple different tour stops but it’s pretty booked up through the summer with other obligations,” he added.

The festival stopped in Terrace earlier in the day, their next stop is on Saturday in Prince George for the BCNE.
