Rugby pitch racing against snow

Town workers are labouring away on the on the new rugby field, hoping to finish all they can before snowfall.

Old sod has been removed and workers have levelled the field along Third Avenue near Manitoba Street.

Smithers Development Services Director Mark Allen hopes to have the seeds set before snowfall.

“It’s still okay to seed in the fall and the seeds will go dormant over the winter and as soon as they can in the Spring they’ll start producing,” he says, “as long as there’s no snow on the ground we can still seed, tat’s the plan.”

Allen adds the pitch will not be ready for next spring, but could be ready by Fall 2016.
