Big plays make the difference in Kodiaks loss to Huskers

It was a game of big plays in the Prince George Kodiaks’ 31-11 loss to the Valley Huskers in Chilliwack last night. (Saturday)

Both teams played well defensively in the first half, with the only offensive points scored in the first two quarters coming off a short run into the end zone from Huskers running back Jawad Harb, his first of three majors on the day.

The Huskers added a field goal, and a 109-yard fumble return touchdown in the first half.

The Kodiaks only put a rouge on the board from a missed 25-yard field goal by Brady Harper.

He hit from 33 yards in the second half.

The Kodiaks also made a house call on a 50-plus yard pick six in the half, but it was called back on an illegal block penalty.

Things started to open up in the second half, starting with a 60-yard touchdown pass from Sawyer Thiessen to Kayle Cowley.

The Huskers regained their lead on a 60 yard scamper by Harb.

Down 24-11 in the final quarter, the Kodiaks were driving to make it a one score game, and went for it on a crucial third down play.

Thiessen floated his pass over a leaping Huskers defender to receiver Matthew Sturgess, but he couldn’t hang on to the ball.

Harb put one more long touchdown run on the board to seal the Husker win.

With the loss, the Kodiaks remain at the bottom of the BCFC standigs with a 1-6 record.

The Kodiaks are back at home next weekend, hosting the 7-0 Okanagan Sun.
