Smithers residents wake up to a white mountain

The first signs of snow could be seen this morning (Friday) on Hudson Bay Mountain.

According to General Manager Lex Rei-Jones, it was slushing Wednesday afternoon.

“By yesterday mid-morning is when [snow] started falling and then that rain, we had in town is what dumped the snow on the mountain,” she said.

According to Rei-Jones, 20 centimeters of snow was recorded on the mountain which isn’t expected to last until the start of Ski and Snowboard season.

Even so, this first snowfall is giving staff hope for what’s to come.

“We’re going to be seeing a wetter and colder winter and that usually translates into snow,” she said.

The snow line does remain above downtown Smithers, but snow could be seen at least to the bottom of the resort’s chair lift.

“We usually have a good dusting by this time but in my recent memory having it snow this much this far down the mountain, it’s a little early,” said Rei-Jones.

Because of how early the snow hit, talks have also started about wanting to open the mountain early this year.

“We have to work around when the snow comes, staff is trained, but if we were able to do so, we’d try to pull something off,” she said.

The current projected date for Ski and Snowboard season to start is December 7th.
