Smithers candi-dating event held ahead of the BC Election

A chance to meet the Bulkley Valley-Stikine candidates was held at the Smithers Library on Saturday.

The Candi-dating event was hosted in collaboration with the Smithers District Chamber of Commerce.

“… to offer an opportunity for people to sit down face to face with all of the candidates and speak with them,” said Library Director Wendy Wright.

In attendance was Nathan Cullen (BC NDP, Incumbent), Sharon L. Hartwell (BC Conservatives), and Rod Taylor (BC Christian Heritage Party, Party Leader).

BC Greens candidate Gamlakyeltxw Wilhem Marsden was not at the event.

Meeting with the candidates was done in a speed dating style, limiting conversations to about five minutes before moving on.

“It really came out of a library’s core mission to build an informed populous and we see it’s so easy to become unknowingly an information bubble when we only talk to people we agree with,” said Wright.

An event like this was held for an election prior to the COVID pandemic and this is the first time it’s been hosted since.

“What we really wanted to do is make sure people have heard all sides of the candidates’ issues and that means meeting with every single one of them,” she said.

Tommorow (Tuesday) evening, the Smithers Chamber will also be hosting an All-Candidates Forum and Coffee with the Candidates at the Della Herman Theatre starting at 6:30.

Voters go to the polls on October 19th.
