Further steps taken to end Smithers’ Permissive Tax Exemption program

Another step towards ending the Permissive Tax Exemption program in Smithers was taken at Tuesday’s Town Council meeting.

At their August 22nd meeting last year, it was recommended to end the program before the 2025 tax season.

It was also discussed that a set list of organizations would be given permissive tax exemptions from 2025 onwards with no new applicants being accepted.

For all three readings of the bylaw amendments, Councilor Calvin Elliot voted in opposition as he had during the previous discussion.

“I’m fully supportive of my taxes supporting our valuable and worthy organizations that provide service in Smithers,” he said at the August 22nd, 2023 meeting.

Included on the list of approved permissive tax-exempt properties are:

  • Bulkley Valley Museum Society’s Old Church
  • Bulkley Valley Museum Society’s second floor storage at Town Hall
  • Wet’suwet’en Treaty Office Society’s main office
  • Smithers Central Park Building
  • Bulkley Valley Search and Rescue Society’s Smithers Airport property
  • Wet’suwet’en Treaty Office Society’s former Lake Kathlyn Elementary building
  • Smithers Art Gallery Association’s Creation Station
  • Gordon William Park

Adoption of the amendments will be done at a future council meeting.
