Downtown Signs, Hens, Radon: Smithers Council Preview

The Town Merchants will present a list of 8 suggestions to the municipal government at tonight’s meeting, which it feels would modernize the alpine-themed bylaws.

These include the allowance of “open” signs, more flexible height restrictions, and potential spring-mounted flags.

Council and the merchants are trying to find a middle ground where signs can fit modern day business needs and still uphold the traditional alpine-theme.

Council will focus on a few bylaws tonight as well.

Changes to the Town’s Animal Control and Licencing ruling could allow residents to own chickens for personal use.

There will also be discussions of rezoning the area between Monkton Road, Gardiner Road, and the CN Rail Line from an “Agricultural Zone” to “Heavy Industrial Zone.”

The Canadian Cancer Society will present their concerns regarding radon exposure tonight

Radon is a naturally-occurring odourless gas that forms in the ground and can rise into homes. If prolonged, exposure increases one’s risk of lung cancer.

In a recent survey, Health Canada found that 5.2% of Northwestern BC homes were overexposed to radon.

The Society is asking the local government to help raise awareness of the dangerous gas.

The public is invited to tonight’s meeting at 6:30 in the Council chambers.
