Bulkley Valley and Lakes District Poppy Campaigns in full swing

Poppy trays can be seen at most businesses in the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District with the Royal Canadian Legion’s annual Poppy Campaign.

“It’s a little slower this year. We know our community is suffering with the closure of Canfor so our economy is sluggish but we’re confident the community will come together and help us,” said Houston Legion Executive Secretary Treasure Joanne Woodbeck.

She added this annual fundraiser is one of their larger ones with the funds going to a specific cause.

“The money raised from the poppy trays goes right into a special poppy trust and that money is only for veterans and their families,” she said.

Burns Lake Legion Trustee Jeanne Parkinson said there is a right way to wear a poppy.

“Some people stick them on their hats but the proper place to put them is on the left side over the heart,” she said.

The Houston fundraiser raised about $9,000 with the campaign in Burns Lake usually earning about $4,000.

Across the region, most businesses have a tray where you can donate to your local legion and get a poppy ahead of Remembrance Day.
