Smithers Princess Street upgrade design chosen

A new multi-use pathway is in the works for Princess Street in Smithers.

This was part of the design chosen by council for the upgrade project at Tuesday’s (Nov. 12) meeting.

This will replace the existing sidewalk along the roadway from the Fulton Avenue path to 16th Avenue.

“That was given overwhelming support by the public at the engagement sessions and was presented to council at the [Oct. 22nd] meeting,” said Director of Development Services Mark Allen.

With the upgrade, one lane of on-street parking will remain along Princess Street.

One concern brought up by the public was whether the trees would be removed.

“Yes, the existing trees are able to remain. I think all of the trees are on private property, so they won’t be affected,” said Allen.

No other trees are expected to be added as town staff is looking at moving the multi-use path closer to the curb.

Staff is also creating a couple budgets for the project around using concrete or pavement for the pathway.

Construction is expected to begin in 2025.
