It was a chilly start to 2025 for some Smithers residents as they participated in the second annual Polar Plunge.
About 20 people made the dip this year into Lake Kathlyn while the air was –9 degrees.
“New Year’s last year was nice. It was zero degrees and sunny,” said Organizer Leandra Wiebe.
The change in venue this year from Seymor Lake was due to cyanobacteria found in the water, prompting a Do Not Use order by Northern Health.
“Hopefully Seymour Lake won’t be closed next year because I’m more familiar with that lake and not with [Lake Kathlyn],” she said.
She added shallow waters, mud, and seaweed were issues with dipping into Lake Kathlyn.
