Progress is moving ahead on adding 160 more long-term care beds in Smithers.
The town announced on Thursday (Jan 2nd) they would be selling the currently vacant property between Alberta Street and Vancouver Street, Alfred Avenue and First Avenue to Northern Health.
“The town is selling it for $1 and an indemnification for $1,000,000 of environmental liability,” said Communication and Engagement Officer Samantha LeBlanc.
In August 2024, the province announced it would be opening the total 216 bed facility by 2030 with 56 of the beds replacing those at Bulkley Lodge.
“This has been on the radar for a long time, working with Northern Health, the province, and Providence Living to find a good spot for it,” said LeBlanc.
The land is currently used to dump snow during the winter and will remain under the town’s ownership until the snow melts.
In that time, the town is looking at alternative locations to dump snow for next winter.
