$2,000 raised through Houston’s Guns vs Hoses hockey game

It was a close match on Sunday for the Guns vs. Hoses hockey game in Houston, with the Houston Volunteer Fire Department claiming a 9-8 victory over the RCMP.

This is the first time since the COVID pandemic the two organizations have battled on the ice with proceeds going towards the Houston Volunteer Fire Fighters’ Charitable Association.

“The last time we played was five years ago and I believe hoses (Fire Fighters) won that game as well,” said Association Board Member Laura Onderwater.

Over 300 people attended the game with about $2,000 being raised through the puck toss, 50/50, and admission.

“Before COVID hit, this was a long-standing tradition. I don’t know how long ago it started but we do have a trophy with multiple dates on it,” she said.

The association is hoping to make the hockey game an annual event and is looking into a potential summer event.

With the funds, they hope to support families in Houston with various needs including medical travel and are looking at creating a scholarship.
