Amnesty considers assigning prisoner of conscience after recent pipeline court case

Amnesty International is considering prisoner of conscience status for three indigenous people if charged in relation to the Costal Gas Link (CGL) pipeline.

The three are Molly Wickham (Sleydo’), Shaylynn Sampson, and Corey Jocko (Jayohcee).

According to the organization, a ruling by the BC Court on Tuesday said the conduct of the RCMP’s Community-Industry Response Group (now Critical Response Unit-BC) did violate the defenders’ charter rights.

They added the charges against the three indigenous women would not be dropped but lesser sentences would be considered.

“We are heartened by Justice Tammen’s stern condemnation of the racist and violent treatment Sleydo’, Sampson and Jocko endured during their arrests,” said Secretary General of Amnesty International Canada’s English-speaking section Ketty Nivyabandi.

Wickham, Sampson, and Jocko would not be the first to receive Prisoner of Conscience if convicted as Adam Gangon (Chief Dsta’hyl) was declared Canada’s first in July 2024 after being sentenced to six months house arrest.
