Telkwa Reading Centre re-opens after improving accessibility

The Telkwa Reading Centre celebrated its grand re-opening today (Thursday) after performing accessibility upgrades.

This included a new sidewalk and ramp, a wheelchair accessible washroom, and a powered door.

“It’s one of the original buildings in Telkwa so it’s been here for quite some time, and it was time to start looking towards making some improvements and renovations,” said Volunteer Jaymie Praught.

The reading centre society started looking at performing the upgrades after the COVID pandemic because they had extra budget from not running as many programs.

They also received a $15,000 community grant from the Wetzin’kwa Community Forest Corporation in 2023 with the village also contributing.

“I think it’s wonderful. I have a child with mobility challenges so it’s refreshing to see buildings in the community trying to make improvements to make everything more accessible to everyone,” Praught said.

She added response to the upgrades have been positive as the centre worked to reopen.

“We hope that anyone who possibly had challenges before with accessing the building finds it more accessible.”

To celebrate, the centre is holding an open house this afternoon from 3:00 to 7:00 so residents can see the upgrades.
