Residents who had categories two or three pile burns over the winter are being asked to check the burn sights as warmer weather arrives in the Bulkley Valley and Lakes District.
According to the Northwest Fire Centre, winter burn piles can “holdover” until the spring, which means that some piles burn deep and smoulder underground until weather conditions allow them to become active again.
No fire bans are in effect for the centre but taking extra care when lighting a fire is recommended.
“In early spring there is a period of increased wildfire risk, shortly after the snow has melted but before vegetation begins to green up, when dead grass, leaves and deadfall branches are more susceptible to burning,” the centre said in a release.
Anyone planning on having a category three burn is required to apply for a burn registration number beforehand.
The fire centre also recommends checking the upcoming weather forecast and checking with your local governments to see if any local burning restrictions are in place before lighting any fire.
