Sunny skies lead to a new high temperature record in Smithers

A temperature record in Smithers was broken yesterday (Tuesday) with a high of 12.9 degrees.

According to Environment Canada, the previous record was 12.8 degrees set in 2019.

“It only beat the record by 0.1 degree but that’s still pretty outstanding for this time of year,” said Meteorologist Derek Lee.

He added the warmer temperature was due to days being longer and few clouds in the sky.

“Spring is known for its fluctuations in temperature, so it was warm yesterday but at the same time got really cold at night.”

Similar temperatures are expected today (Wednesday) in Smithers with rain or snow tonight and tomorrow.

A full forecast can be found on Environment Canada’s website.

In Burns Lake, overnight lows hit –5.4 degrees and tied Fort Nelson for being the coldest place in the province.

This morning, that was replaced by colder temperatures recorded in northeast BC.
