The Telkwa Father’s Day Fishing Derby is returning for its third year at Tyhee Lake Provincial Park.
This is part of the Learn to Fish program in the province and coincides with BC waving salt and freshwater fishing license requirements.
“That gave me the idea to do this in Telkwa,” said Organizer Michelle Finch.
“We have Tyhee Lake Provincial Park at the beach, and we basically teach people how to fish, fly fish, hold demos, face painting, crafts, a fishing pond, bingo, and tons of prizes to give away.”
The Telkwa Fire Department, BC Conservation officers, Department of Fisheries and Oceans, and Telkwa councillors will also be at the event.
Last year, the largest fish caught was a 23 inch rainbow trout which currently holds the record for the largest catch at the event.
Divisions for the event include the largest fish caught solo, as a family, and burbot.
“We have hidden weight sizes so you could even catch a little two inch fish and there’s prizes as well,” said Finch.
About 400 participants were at the event last year with people coming from Prince George and Prince Rupert this year.
It runs June 15th from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
