Ice in the Bulkley River has caused some concern for nearby residents.
Ice dams have caused flooding and a Smithers family to temporarily evacuate their home.
Program Director at local Emergency Training School “Raven Rescue” Ron Morrison says homeowners should be paying attention to the river.
“staying in touch with what the water is doing in your area so if you start to see water that is starting to come up onto your property, [start] thinking about what your exit strategies are,” he says, “where are you going to go, how are you going to be able to get out, what if the water comes up is that going to affect your exit routes?”
Morrison adds the ice’s strength is unpredictable. He says it’s safest to avoid the river.
