Lake Kathlyn Elementary’s days may be numbered

The sun may be setting on Lake Kathlyn Elementary.

District 54 Board members gave notice at Tuesday’s Board meeting. Consistent low enrollment numbers at both the school and in the district are to blame.

Bulkley Valley Teachers Union President Ilona Weiss was at Tuesday night`s meeting.

“When the conversation went to closing the school it was definitely emotional for parents and for teachers. It was really tough,” she says.

She understands this burden as both a teacher and a parent.

“I have two kids that went to the same school all throughout elementary school. It’s a big transition for kids if they’re pulled out of their school, nevermind the parents, so it’s tough.”

The Board of Education and district administration will hold public meetings at the school on Thursday, February 4th, 2016 and 6:30 PM and at the Moricetown Multi-Plex on Tuesday, March 8th, 2016 at 6:30 PM. A third public forum may be held in Smithers at an unknown date.

A final decision will be made on April 12th, 2016 at 6:30 PM at Lake Kathlyn Elementary.
