NEWPRO is set to open up again this month. Some residents are excited about it while others feel the complete opposite.
Dave Stevens, a member of a local air pollution advocacy group called CHOKED, says opening up the plant again as a particle board manufacturer is bad news.
“Now if they reopen it will be guaranteed there will be more pollution. This means more people will get sick, more people will die, more children will miss school,” he says.
He shares what he feels is the best situation for Smithers.
“They can stay closed. That would be the very best thing.”
NEWPRO Management has spent the past two years trying to turn the plant into a wood pellet manufacturer.
It says the plant will begin production this month while it awaits the permit.
