Portsch takes 4th at Provincial cook-off

IMG_0638SSS grade 11 student Veronica Portsch was one of 12 chefs at last week’s Skills Canada – Culinary Arts (Secondary) competition in Abbotsford.

Each cook had about three hours to make a bunch of dishes, including a steamed mussels appetizer, and two roasted pork tenderloin main courses.

Competitors were marked out of a hundred. At the end of the event, only 5 points separated all the competitors. Veronica finished in 4th.

She says one of the most memorable moments for her was when it was all done.

“I brought my final plate up and just walked back to my station and I was completely done and the competition was over, everything I’d worked so hard for was over. It was such a relief,” she says.

She says she’s driven by the culinary world’s endless potential.

“Cooking is such a broad thing. You can either work at Arby’s or work at a 3-michelin star restaurant so just being a part of that spectrum and knowing that I can possibly one day own my own restaurant, create my own things, kind of make some noise in the culinary world is really neat.”

After she graduates next June, Veronica has her sights on culinary school and some business courses.
