Quebec students headed to Smithers

Smithers has quite a few young adults headed to town on Friday.

Through a national exchange program, 30 high school students from Saint-Augustin-de-Desmaures, a suburb of Quebec City, will be staying with local Gryphons.

Grade 9 student Emily Buenten says there are huge differences between the two places.

“[They’re] more than geographical, but cultural, and just even how they grow up. They grew up in a city meanwhile we’re in a small town on the other side of Canada,” she says.

To really experience the North, local grade 9 student Neve Foreman says they’re all headed to the coast.

“We’re going to stop at some First Nations villages and learn about First Nation culture. We’re also going to learn about kayaking and trapping and the cannery down in Prince Rupert,” she adds.

The girls add that the visiting students will have an easier time speaking English than most of the Gryphons did speaking French.
