Adult recreational hockey is returning to Houston for the first time in about a decade with the launch of the Bulkley Valley Hockey League on Oct. 16.
In March, the league held its first Parish Cup tournament to gauge community interest and gather feedback.
“It actually brought a fair bit of money to the town and to the arena, and it really got the buzz going about some semi-competitive hockey,” league president Evan Timms said.
The four teams for the season are CAST Cuts Butcher Shop, Inland Truck & Equipment, Nadina Truck Service Ltd., and T. Jaarsma Contracting Ltd.
Timms said having four teams in its first season is exciting and that the response to the league has been positive.
The season opener will feature CAST Cuts versus Inland from 9 p.m. to 10:15 p.m.
Nadina will take on T. Jaarsma Contracting the following night from 7 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
“The times are a little late in this season just because of other community hockey events that are going on. These were the best times we could get,” Timms said.
Timms said admission to this season’s games is free, with games being played at the Claude Parish Memorial Arena.
A full-season schedule will be released at a later date, along with a website for the league.
The team rosters and information about upcoming games can be found on the league’s Facebook group.
