Henry Wiebe will not be on the election ballet in October for Burns Lake mayor.
He told My Bulkley Lakes Now the decision was difficult and one he thought about for a while.
“My wife retired last year, we had some other plans we wanted to do in our retirement and being mayor just didn’t seem to fit in there,” Wiebe said.
He was first elected to council in 2018 before moving into the mayor seat in 2022.
Some of the projects he helped work on during that time were the new Burns Lake Fire Hall, new sidewalks and pavement on several roadways, and a new recreation area.
Wiebe also helped in bringing a new water treatment facility to the village with work on a wastewater treatment facility expected to finish this year.
“They’re both capable of supplying water and treating water even if we doubled our population,” he said.
Another win brought up was that partnerships the village has with the First Nations in and around the village.
The biggest challenge during his time on council and as mayor Wiebe said was money.
“We have been very thankful for the grants that we have got while I was on council.”
He also acknowledged contributions from the village’s staff towards the various projects.
Wiebe believes future councils have been setup for success.
The civic election is scheduled for October 17.
